[Transcript] #9: OPay - From Web Browser & Fintech to blitzscaling and building Africa's Super App
Transcripts from the episode recorded August 10, 2020.
Bankole here.
I'm happy to share this lightly edited transcript from our OPay episode recorded in 2020.
At the time, OPay was flying high - bursting onto the scene with huge discounts to acquire customers (N100 for N2,000 Trips!! 90% off food!). SuperApps were all the rage and OPay was all in. They also raised a staggering $170M, accounting for 20% of all African startup funding in 2019.
But the pandemic and Nigerian regulations hit them hard. They quickly pivoted to focus on fintech.
Today's OPay feels different, but remains ambitious, aggressively expanding outside Nigeria and taking market share. Like Shein, Temu and TikTok, OPay reflects a push for global Chinese influence. These companies are well-funded, disciplined, and persistent.
This episode was as fun to record then as it is to listen to now. Paid subscribers can enjoy the full transcript below, and everyone can listen again at afrobility.com/opay or here to open in your favorite podcast player.
