How to create a podcast (by Olumide Ogunsanwo)

Hello wonderful Afrobility listeners and readers!

Last month, I published an article on my other substack (for Firedom book) called “How to self-publish a book” so I thought I would write a similar companion piece for Afrobility so here goes…

Why should you take advice from me about starting a podcast?

Because I (& Bankole Makanju) created & run Afrobility which is the most downloaded Africa Tech podcast in the world according to listennotes

Macro questions to consider (before you start)

  1. Purpose (what is your "why")? Most podcasters quit very soon after they start (90% of podcasters have fewer than 10 episodes). I think that’s because they don’t have a clear “why” that pushes them so they get demotivated very soon after they start. Don’t bother creating a podcast if you don’t have a clear why for yourself. Here are some potential reasons you may be starting a podcast:

    1. Are you starting a podcast for money? If you are, don’t bother, most podcasts don’t make any money. In fact, you will spend your money to edit, release and distribute the podcast, so you will be financially worse off by the time you are done.

    2. Are you starting a podcast for fame? If you are, don’t bother, most likely no one will listen to your podcast because the median podcast gets ~30 downloads per episode.
